Entrepreneurs: Leading the Way in Learning & Development

As I wrote last month, entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of today’s economy. I am, at heart, an entrepreneur. “Being my own boss,” as they say, at different times in my career has allowed me to experience the benefits (and challenges) of entrepreneurship. I’ve also been fortunate to work closely with and learn from talented independent business owners across the globe.

Recently, I shared three key traits of successful entrepreneurs. More specifically, for USANA business partners, I previously identified four core beliefs critical to success.

I thought about these traits and beliefs as I joined my direct selling colleagues in Washington, D.C., in late September for Direct Selling Day on Capitol Hill. The day is an opportunity for direct selling leaders to unite to champion the industry we hold dear. We shared stories and presented facts for lawmakers to consider as they encounter legislation that impacts independent business owners.

It’s a privilege to represent and advocate for courageous, innovative, and determined individuals who contribute so much to so many.

Entrepreneurs: Continued Learning & Development

In October, we celebrate National Learning and Development Month in the United States. It reminds us all that lifelong learning leads to success. Through organizations such as the Direct Selling Education Foundation (of which I’m honored to lead as chairman), we can give the public a snapshot of direct sellers’ incredible work. Even more, the DSEF educates those who are educating the next generation of entrepreneurs.

“The purpose of the Direct Selling Education Foundation is to engage, equip and empower educators to provide students with an accurate understanding of the direct selling industry as a powerful go-to-market strategy, distribution model and entrepreneurial option.”

Entrepreneurship isn’t easy. Hard work and determination are critical. Resilience is key, considering that rejection is a constant challenge.

But the rewards are so worth it.

  • Hours spent hustling are exchanged for a meeting-free Thursday afternoon to attend a child’s soccer game.
  • Suffering through a stream of rejections leads to an indescribable euphoria when a “yes!” arrives.
  • And let’s face it: a career focused on building and nurturing relationships can only lead to positive outcomes.

These are the messages we sought to convey as we interacted with decision-makers on Capitol Hill here in the United States. It’s what Direct Sellers Day in Canada strives to accomplish as well. So, as you continue making a difference in the lives of many through your entrepreneurial endeavors, I hope you realize that your colleagues are rooting for you and appreciate your efforts and sacrifices.

An Honor to Visit the Iconic White House

The historic and iconic White House is a beacon of democracy. It stands tall and proud, commanding respect worldwide.

When the invitation to visit the White House arrived, I immediately recognized its magnitude. Let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint. I’m grateful to have joined Direct Selling Association colleagues on Feb. 28, 2024, to present on key policy matters that could affect entrepreneurs.

The Direct Selling Association delegation presented at the White House on policy matters important to entrepreneurs.

As I stepped on the grounds and through the doors, I felt a sense of honor and humility. Walking the halls world leaders walk. Rooms echoing monumental decisions that shaped our world. This grand structure symbolizes unity and belonging.

It was an experience that left me deeply moved and inspired. Two things stood out:

  1. The dedication of the good and hardworking people managing our nation’s daily complexities
  2. The overwhelming sense of patriotism, especially when I saw the American flag posted proudly

Creating Powerful Memories

This visit held a personal significance for me. Like many of my friends, my father’s military service meant personal sacrifices and a dedicated commitment to our country. Throughout the visit, I felt a connection to Dad and thought of the sacrifices made by countless individuals for our freedom and democracy.

It reminded me of the leadership, hard work, and sacrifice we all share to realize a common purpose. It’s a testament to what we can achieve when we come together, guided by sound values and principles.

My visit to the White House reaffirmed my gratitude for our country’s past and hope for its future. It reinforced our shared democratic values, a testament to our collective strength as humans. It’s a reminder that we, the people, are indeed the pillars of this great nation. Let’s all remember the importance of unity and commitment to a greater cause.

USANA CEO Elected as Chairman of the Board of Direct Selling Association

In June 2021, USANA Chairman and CEO Kevin Guest was elected to serve as Chairman of the Board of the Direct Selling Association (DSA). The DSA is a national trade organization for direct sales companies. Guest was elected by members of the Association and will serve a one-year term.

“I am honored for the privilege of serving this great organization, which plays such a crucial role in promoting innovation and integrity within the direct selling industry.

“I have worked in direct sales for more than 25 years, in which time I have seen tremendous growth in the industry; much of that growth is due to the leadership and guidance DSA provides its member companies.

“I would like to sincerely thank DSA members for giving me this opportunity to help further strengthen our industry’s foothold in the marketplace.” — Kevin Guest
