August means it’s time to celebrate Happiness Happens Month, a time dedicated to finding joy and sharing it with others.

Founded in 1998, this month is all about recognizing that happiness doesn’t have to wait; it can happen today. It should happen today. As someone who deeply values the importance of positivity in both life and business, I’ve long felt happiness is not only contagious but essential for living a full, authentic life.

“Happiness Happens Month” serves as a powerful reminder that joy isn’t found only in life’s big moments. Often, it’s the small things that bring us the greatest delight. Whether it’s a smile from a stranger, an act of kindness, or the beauty of nature, these moments build up to create a life centered on joy.

What’s more, living a happy life doesn’t happen by chance; it’s an intentional decision we make every single day. Below, I’ll share four ways to make happiness happen this month with suggestions rooted in both personal experience and principles that have guided my own life and career.

1. Sunrise Gratitude: Light the Day Before It Lights You

Happiness begins with gratitude. Incorporating it into your morning routine can set a positive tone for the entire day. Start by taking just five minutes each morning to reflect on the things you’re thankful for.

Research shows that practicing gratitude not only boosts personal happiness but also improves mental health and reduces stress. A gratitude journal that tracks the good in your life is a helpful reminder, even on challenging days.

Cool idea: Handwrite a letter sharing how their friendship has impacted your life. Be specific. Mention that one time they showed up when it mattered most. At that level, it’s not just pen and paper; it’s a keepsake of connection.

3. Create a Personalized Gift

Store-bought gifts can be handy, but they rarely compare to a tailored gesture. Go old school with a photo album filled with shared memories or a playlist of “your” songs. When you customize something to reflect their uniqueness, that connection becomes a permanent reminder of care.

Strange as it may sound, that’s the intersection where World Sauntering Day and World Productivity Day meet in June. These seemingly opposing celebrations provide a powerful reminder that balancing relaxation with intentional output can unlock a higher level of personal well-being and efficiency.

Feeling overworked? Stressed? Stuck? Maybe what you need is a leisurely walk.

Let Walking Clear Your Mind

When was the last time you truly slowed down? A casual stroll isn’t just an indulgence; it’s a strategy. Studies show walking can reduce stress hormone levels, kick up endorphins, and boost creative problem-solving by up to 60%. If you’re overwhelmed by your packed calendar, take 10 minutes to step away from your desk, move at an unhurried pace, and reconnect with your surroundings.

Why does this work? When walking, especially outdoors, you’re forcing your brain to break from its usual loops (the ones we don’t realize we’re in until we’re stuck in them). That report due at 3 p.m.? It’ll still be there. But shifting gears—even briefly—takes the pressure off your mental glass ceiling and paves the way for clearer perspectives when you dive back in.

Here’s your challenge on World Sauntering Day (June 19). The next time your mind feels cluttered, lace up your shoes, put the phone on silent, and simply walk. Saunter, meander, explore—but make sure speed isn’t the goal. The results might surprise you.

On to a heavier question. What does productivity mean to you? If it’s measured in sleepless nights or nonstop grind, it’s time to rethink. World Productivity Day (June 20) reminds us that we gain nothing from burnout. Instead, systems and balance drive sustainable success.

You can start by assessing your existing routines. For example, does every hour on your schedule need to be crammed full? Consider carving out deliberate downtime—even 10-minute breaks between tasks. Why? Research shows your brain’s performance dwindles dramatically without pauses, especially when working on challenging tasks. Slowing down doesn’t mean you’re falling behind; it means you’re working smarter.

And here comes the kicker. Those leisurely strolls? Match them with productivity techniques like the Pomodoro method. Work for 25 minutes. Walk for five. Then repeat. This cycle transforms time management into an exercise in sustainability, which protects both output and sanity.

Now that we agree that rest is just as critical as output, what does balance in real life look like? Try any of these four practical ideas:

  4. Set Boundaries (a secret to success!): Productivity isn’t about endless availability. Say no when necessary, limit redundant meetings, and protect personal time as fiercely as deadlines.

Having a lifelong love of playing music, I know the value of a band in rhythm. Imagine, then, what would happen if you built a routine in rhythm that respects both productivity and relaxation in equal measure?

See yourself starting your day with reflection on a short morning walk, gearing up to tackle priority tasks energized and focused. Add breaks throughout your schedule, intentionally recalibrating your focus before switching between activities. Wrap up with a win—not rushing through emails at nightfall but instead reflecting on goals met, celebrating small victories, and maybe even enjoying a sunset stroll to unwind.

It’s not just about fitting it all in. It’s about a rhythm that works with, not against, the natural pacing your mind and body crave.

Growing up in Montana, nature wasn’t just part of my surroundings; it shaped who I am. Lake Blaine was my playground and my sanctuary. It taught me valuable lessons about living in harmony and the importance of balancing physical, mental, and emotional well-being. These lessons are as vital today as they were then, and National Outdoors Month is the perfect opportunity to rediscover them.

From Loss Comes Opportunity

One story in All the Right Reasons illustrates the remarkable resilience of my parents, who turned a devastating loss into an opportunity to rebuild stronger.

When I was a kid, my parents took a huge risk buying a lumber mill, mortgaging their house and life savings. When a fire caused by an employee destroyed the mill, they were devastated. Yet, my dad, valuing kindness and forgiveness, never blamed the employee, who continued working there for years.

Instead of dwelling on their loss, my dad and his partner were resilient and rebuilt a bigger, better mill, putting employees back to work. Thanks to my dad’s integrity and strong relationships, bankers, customers, and suppliers supported him during this challenging time.

Today, I strive to combine corporate expertise with wisdom gained from personal experiences to serve as an advisor for others seeking success. Incorporating the above four principles has helped thousands of leaders elevate their strategies.

The Power of Asking

Sometimes, life-changing moments start with a single, brave question. It’s a concept we often overlook, held back by doubts or hesitation. Yet in my own life, I discovered the power of asking a question.

Years ago, I took a bold step: I asked country music star Collin Raye to perform at my company convention. It wasn’t an easy question to ask. I had to put myself out there, not knowing how he’d respond. But to my surprise, he said yes. What I had envisioned as a professional collaboration somehow evolved into something much more meaningful today.

From that first “yes,” a blossoming friendship emerged, built on mutual respect and shared passion for music. Over time, I found myself welcomed into Collin’s world. Playing guitar with his touring band became a surreal reality, and eventually, I stood center stage again this month at the Grand Ole Opry, this time playing during International Guitar Month. To this day, I think back on that incredible experience and marvel at everything that followed a single question.

When I approached Collin Raye, I couldn’t have predicted the opportunities that would follow. I simply sought his talent for our annual convention, but that one conversation unlocked possibilities I hadn’t dared to dream of. Asking empowers you to create openings where none existed before. It’s the catalyst that turns “what if” into reality.
