The Power of Asking

April 15, 2025/0 Comments/in Blog/by Kevin Guest

Sometimes, life-changing moments start with a single, brave question. It’s a concept we often overlook, held back by doubts or hesitation. Yet in my own life, I discovered the power of asking a question.

Years ago, I took a bold step: I asked country music star Collin Raye to perform at my company convention. It wasn’t an easy question to ask. I had to put myself out there, not knowing how he’d respond. But to my surprise, he said yes. What I had envisioned as a professional collaboration somehow evolved into something much more meaningful today.

From that first “yes,” a blossoming friendship emerged, built on mutual respect and shared passion for music. Over time, I found myself welcomed into Collin’s world. Playing guitar with his touring band became a surreal reality, and eventually, I stood center stage again this month at the Grand Ole Opry, this time playing during International Guitar Month. To this day, I think back on that incredible experience and marvel at everything that followed a single question.

Remarkable experiences often start with a single question. Take that step. You never know whose world, or yours, it might change.

This story isn’t just about music or chance encounters with a celebrity; it’s a testament to the overlooked power of asking. Taking that single step has the potential to reshape professional trajectories and also personal ones. Here are four reasons why asking can be truly transformational.
Kevin Guest and Collin Raye entering the Grand Ol' Opry

1. Opening Doors to Unexpected Opportunities

When I approached Collin Raye, I couldn’t have predicted the opportunities that would follow. I simply sought his talent for our annual convention, but that one conversation unlocked possibilities I hadn’t dared to dream of. Asking empowers you to create openings where none existed before. It’s the catalyst that turns “what if” into reality.

What opportunity have you been hesitant to pursue because the odds seem slim? Whether it’s pitching a bold idea, reaching out to a mentor, or even exploring a new career path, asking is the first step to making it happen. Simply put, it’s invigorating!

2. Building Meaningful Relationships

Through my interactions with Collin, I quickly learned that asking isn’t just about achieving a goal; it’s also about forging connections. What started as a professional request became an enduring friendship. To me, that’s a reminder that vulnerability and genuine curiosity can foster relationships you never expected to have.

Think about the relationships you’ve missed out on because you held back. Sometimes, the question isn’t about what you want but how opening a dialogue can create mutual growth and understanding.

3. Fostering Personal Growth

When I last stepped on the Grand Ole Opry stage, there was a moment of clear self-awareness. I wasn’t just performing; I was reflecting on how far I’d come, all because I had dared to ask. Those moments of grit and bravery are pivotal in shaping who we are.

Every time you push past fear, you grow as a person. You become more resilient and adaptable. Whether the outcome is positive or not, it’s the act of trying that teaches you the most valuable lessons.

4. Enhancing Confidence

It’s remarkable how asking can change your perception of yourself. Facing the initial fear of rejection is tough, but once you take the leap, it’s empowering. Even in moments where the answer is “no,” the courage it takes to ask reinforces your belief in your own worthiness.

That confidence builds over time, making it easier to advocate for yourself in both personal and professional settings. With each ask, you reinforce the idea that you are capable of creating opportunities and connections.

Overcome the Fear of Asking

Many of us hesitate to ask for what we want, largely due to fear of rejection. What if they say no? What if I embarrass myself? These thoughts are natural but can be incredibly limiting. Truthfully, rejection is often less intimidating than we imagine, and there are ways to build resilience against those fears.

Here’s how to start overcoming the common barriers that hold you back from asking:

  • Shift your mindset. Instead of focusing on rejection, focus on possibility. What could go right?
  • Practice vulnerability. Accept that some level of discomfort is part of growth. People appreciate authenticity, and your willingness to ask often speaks volumes about your character.
  • Prepare for outcomes. Consider both the best- and worst-case scenarios. This preparation helps you manage expectations and approach the situation with a rational mindset.
  • Celebrate the ask. Even if the answer is no, acknowledge that you took the step. That action alone is a success and something to be proud of.

Harness the Power of Asking

If I hadn’t asked Collin Raye that first question, my life would look different today. From new friendships and extraordinary experiences to deeper self-confidence, I’ve reaped the rewards of simply daring to speak up.

But here’s the point of it all: What’s the one thing you’ve been holding back from asking for? A career move? A mentor’s advice? A second chance? Don’t underestimate the power of your own voice. The possibilities are endless when you remain curious, bold and willing to step into the unknown. I know because I’ve lived that—over and over again.

Remarkable experiences often start with a single question. Take that step. You never know whose world, or yours, it might change.

6 Ways Playing Guitar Boosts Mental Well-Being

April 1, 2025/0 Comments/in Blog/by Kevin Guest

April’s convergence of International Guitar Month and Stress Awareness Month makes a perfect pairing that celebrates the healing power of music for mental well-being.

While music has long been heralded as a universal remedy, the guitar offers far more than just melodies. Studies, stories, and specialists alike agree: playing the guitar is a proven method to reduce stress.

Music has the extraordinary ability to uplift and inspire. As someone who’s played guitar for years, I encourage everyone to immerse themselves in the joy of playing guitar this month. It’s a simple, powerful way to enhance your well-being.

Striking the Right Chord: Playing Guitar Creates Harmony

6 Ways the Guitar Boosts Mental Wellness | Kevin GuestI believe playing guitar nurtures both mind and soul. Here are six ways I’ve found the instrument to boost mental well-being.

  1. Stress Escape: Anyone can lose themselves in music and find calm in the strums.
  2. Boosted Mood: Playing guitar releases dopamine, the happiness chemical.
  3. Mindfulness: Focusing on music reduces anxiety and centers one’s mind.
  4. Social Connection: Sharing music builds powerful, emotional bonds.
  5. Creative Outlet: Songwriting expresses emotions and eases stress.
  6. Better Sleep: Relaxing guitar sessions lead to improved rest.

In All the Right Reasons: 12 Timeless Principles for Living a Life in Harmony, I emphasize how music minimizes stress and strengthens relationships that matter. When I was young, I lived music down to my bones, and harmonies played constantly in my head. I wanted to be a rock star more than anything else.

Today, music speaks to the soul like nothing else can. This love for music, this awe I have for the process, has been with me for as long as I can remember. Music has transformed my life and offered calmness and clarity where there was chaos. When anxiety takes hold, a melody actually soothes my nerves. Whether it’s a soft tune or a lively rhythm with bands I play in, music brings a peace I never thought possible. It’s been my strength, saving me more times than I can count.

I shared a version of this article in a news release on April 1, 2025. All the Right Reasons provides more inspiring examples of the power of music. All proceeds go to feeding hungry children, and each book purchase provides 40 meals.
