Two Keys for Leadership Success

Earlier this month, I spoke to over a thousand business leaders from throughout the U.S. and Europe about two keys for leadership success: integrity and excellence.

From my experience in today’s professional world, integrity and excellence are crucial for success.

To me, integrity means honesty and strong moral principles. Excellence is the pursuit of outstanding quality. I’ve seen that the most effective leaders demonstrate these traits through transparent communication, accountability, and continuous improvement.

What are the key benefits? Trust from colleagues and clients, and career advancement.

For example, Warren Buffett’s unwavering integrity has earned immense trust. And Steve Jobs’ relentless pursuit of excellence revolutionized the technology that most of us hold in our hands today.

I invited the audience to reflect on values, to set high personal standards, and to seek feedback so they stay on track to achieve their goals. Now, I encourage you to embrace integrity and excellence to unlock trust, respect and unparalleled success. No doubt, you deserve it!

Relax: Resources to Stay Calm and Alleviate Stress

Stress management and finding ways to relax are key drivers for effective self-care. I’ll never forget the feeling I had as I stood backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. About to play alongside country superstar and good friend Collin Raye, my mind was filled with negative thoughts.

“Who do you think you are? You’re a part-time, amateur bass player who doesn’t belong on a stage with professional musicians. This is one of the most important performances of Collin’s career. Are you going to be the guy who messes it up? You aren’t good enough to be here.”

The performance turned out fine. But I regret that negative self-talk prevented me from truly enjoying what, for many, would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Fortunately, I got another chance to play on that legendary stage. This time, I didn’t let negative thoughts ruin the experience.

What changed? I learned strategies and techniques to quiet the negative chatter in my mind.

In my book, All the Right Reasons, and on this blog, I’ve written extensively about managing stress, alleviating anxiety, and finding ways to relax. Here are several resources compiled from my writings that you might find beneficial. The first (and perhaps most important) resource helps me remain present and enjoy life’s great moments.

Alleviating Fear and Anxiety… Relax and Just Breathe

I take viewers through the exercise in this video, but if you think about a square, you can picture the exercise (closing your eyes also helps):

  1. Breathe in for four counts
  2. Hold it in for four counts
  3. Exhale slowly for another four counts
  4. And finally, maintain the exhale for four counts before repeating the cycle

I usually do that four times. It’s amazing how it sets my mind right. It allows me to become present and to achieve what I know I’m capable of accomplishing.

Pick Up a Good Book: Reading to Nourish the Mind and Soul

Longtime readers of this blog might remember the regular What I’m Reading series. In short posts and video clips, I’d discuss books that I’d recently read or that had influenced me in some way.

Though I haven’t added to the series in a while, that doesn’t mean I’ve quit reading! In fact, I’m usually reading a handful of books at a time, covering a variety of topics. My current stack includes books on personal and professional development, music and musicians, self-care, and mindfulness, among other topics.

“What Are You Reading?”

That’s the question I get, perhaps more than any other, when I visit or speak to different groups. I’m happy to share, as I often find myself asking mentors and leaders I admire the same question.

I strongly believe that success requires a growth mindset, which can be created by nourishing one’s mind and soul. Further, your mindset will determine your relevance in every aspect of your life.

Lifelong learning through books is a great way to accomplish this. Here are three books that recently have helped me to better understand different aspects of the world.

The Founder's MentalityThe Founder’s Mentality

The subtitle of this 2016 bestseller is How to Overcome the Predictable Crises of Growth. The book’s principles for managing growth while avoiding pitfalls are invaluable for entrepreneurs and corporate managers alike. While many leaders are defending against external threats, the authors found that the bigger dangers to an organization often are internal.

Living the Beatles LegendLiving the Beatles Legend

If you know me, you’re familiar with my admiration for The Beatles. I’ve read a lot about the influential band and just as much about the individual musicians. But this one centers on Mal Evans, “the Beatles’ beloved friend, confidant, and roadie.” He saw it all, and I found his story fascinating and tragic. It also includes several cool and rare photos.

What a Fool BelievesWhat a Fool Believes

This new memoir from Michael McDonald, the legendary Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers, and solo singer-songwriter, is a great read for rock-n-roll fans. It’s also an inspiring story about never giving up on your dreams.

Celebrate Reading

On Aug. 9 each year we recognize National Book Lovers Day. It’s a day to celebrate reading and literature.

And then, on Sept. 6, it’s National Read a Book Day. That’s when we should collectively pick up a book and spend the day (or as much time as we can) reading.

We definitely don’t need these unofficial holidays as an excuse to read. I know I’ll be picking up a book on these days — and every day before and after, and I encourage you to do the same.

Please let me know what you’re reading by dropping a title in the comments.

7 Steps to Soar Like Olympians

Inspired by Olympians, I’m urging each of us to dig deep into our inner strength to excel in our personal and professional lives. Today’s elite athlete shows tremendous discipline, resilience, determination, and grit, all traits that develop winners in life.

So much of life comes down to understanding your passion and having the willingness and grit to turn it into something great. It’s easy to dream. The hard part is doing the work. The hard part is developing the grit.

As the sponsor of thousands of elite athletes, USANA Health Sciences values excellence and well-being. Our top-tier nutritional products undergo rigorous testing and nurture body, mind, and spirit.

Thinking about the Olympics, I’m inspired by the remarkable dedication and persistence of these athletes. Their relentless pursuit of excellence teaches us valuable lessons that we can apply in our own lives.

7 Steps to Achieve Success Like Olympians

Drawing inspiration from these elite competitors, here are seven practical steps to achieve success.

1. Set Clear Goals

Define career and personal objectives with specific, measurable goals. Break them down into smaller, manageable tasks to maintain focus and direction.

2. Commit to Continuous Improvement

Constantly refine your skills; similarly, invest in lifelong learning. Attend workshops, seek mentorship, and stay updated with industry trends to stay ahead of the curve.

3. Embrace Failure as a Learning Opportunity

View setbacks as opportunities for growth. Reflect on failures, identify lessons learned, and apply them to improve future performance.

4. Cultivate a Winning Mindset

A positive mental attitude is crucial for success. Stay optimistic, focus on your strengths, and visualize achievements. This mindset will propel one forward, even in challenging times.

5. Build a Supportive Network

Rely on coaches, teammates, and supporters. Be surrounded by individuals who encourage and motivate. Networking can provide valuable advice, opportunities, and emotional support.

6. Maintain Physical and Mental Well-being

Prioritize health. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and mindfulness practices contribute to sustained energy and focus.

7. Celebrate Progress

Celebrate every milestone, big or small. Recognize and reward achievements along the way to stay motivated and appreciate the upward journey.

The Road to Success

By implementing these steps, you can channel the determination into your own pursuits and achieve higher levels in both your career and personal life. In my global travels, I’ve seen that the road to success is paved with continual effort, resilience, and an unwavering belief in your own potential.
